MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Denise A. C. Welsh

Welcome to the West Indian Foundation Web Site.

The West Indian Foundation is the central focus of West Indian cultural, social and educational activities in the Greater Hartford community. By focusing primarily on youth education and career development, we continue to favorably influence the lives of many inner-city students in our communities. Most of our youth programs are held within the Hartford public school system, utilizing the skills and expertise of the principals, teachers and staff members. A summary of these programs is as follows:
  • Our After School Communication, Arts and Math Program increase the academic skill level of the students, which allow them to improve school performance and be better prepared for advanced education.
  • The Fine Art Summer Academic and Enrichment Program provides an outlet for creative expression for our young people while we introduce them to the rich traditions of the Caribbean culture.
  • Our Career Recreation/Education Program exposes the youths to career opportunities as they become aware of their talents and skills in preparing for future careers.
  • Other youth programs, such as the Junior Cricket Program and the Youth Day Celebration, provide recreation and fun for our young people as they cultivate increased self-esteem in a competitive setting.
The West Indian Foundation depends on contributions and grants from various sources to run its programs. Over the years, the main contributors are public and private foundations, corporate community, United Way, special fund raising events and individual donations. And as we embark on expanding our adult programs through health fairs and community activities, I must pause to thank our funding sources for their tremendous support. We at the West Indian Foundation want to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for supporting our goals and objectives over the years. Without your commitment, a hard-working board of directors,we could never achieve the level of success that we enjoy today.

I hope you find this site extremely informative as we strive to perpetuate the heritage of a Caribbean people throughout the Diaspora.
