EFFORTS TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND ACTIVITIES APPROPRIATE FOR SPECIFIC IDENTIFIED AUDIENCES:
"EDUCATIONAL and SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS FOR YOUTHS":
The West Indian Foundation is committed to the education and development
of youths. Ongoing programs include the Fine Arts, Career Recreation
Educational, After School Communication Arts and Mathematics, Junior
Cricket and a Youth Day Celebration.
The Foundation seeks to encourage and motivate students to reach higher
standards of achievement, through the Marcus Garvey and the West Indian
Migrant Farm Workers Scholarship Programs, annual scholarship awards
provides recognition and financial support for students pursuing a
college education.
"EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS":
Through the "Over 40" Committee a variety of educational seminars and
workshops for adults are produced. Past workshops have included such
topics Stress Management, Financial Management, Adult Literacy, Legal
Planning, Home Management, Managing Loneliness for seniors, Breast,
Cervical and Prostate Cancer Detection, as well as Sports, Recreation
and Physical Education.
"FAMILY EVENTS":
Support to social programs, such as; Marcus Garvey Essay Contest, West
Indian Week; activities including a Greater Hartford West Indian Parade,
Cultural Extravaganza, Health Fair, In and Outdoor Summer Concerts,
Caribbean Arts and Craft Christmas Bazaar and Children's Theatre
reinforces the strong commitment to family unity which is deeply rooted
in the West Indian cultural traditions.
"COMMUNITY OUTREACH and DEVELOPMENT":
A goal of the West Indian Foundation is to foster and strengthen a sense
of unity among all West Indian social, fraternal, business groups and
associations, through efforts by Friends of the West Indian Foundation
working with area health, education, business and cultural organizations
to provide ongoing service to the community.
"CARRIBEAN SHOWCASE"
The Foundation serves as a communal resource to improve the quality of
life for West Indians and West Indian-Americans. Our CARIBBEAN SHOWCASE
is designed to explore activities around Arts in Education, Music and
Dance, aimed on focusing on traditions of the Caribbean that will
enhance mutual understanding and sharing of the culture, both in and
around the Metro Hartford region.
